In the 1960s, Sue grows up in an all-White neighborhood on Chicago’s southwest side where she is mothered by the women on the block but also hears her neighbors’ constant talk about “them.” One day, a teacher drives Sue and other students to the all-Black west side of the city where Sue hears about the uneven city services there. The residents stage a protest in front of City Hall. Sue is moved by their bravery but, at the same time, she knows that what she has witnessed will pull her away from the people she loves.
