Journeys of the Heart
Written and told by Susan O’Halloran
Have you ever tried tracing your family’s origins? In Grandmother’s Story, Sue takes a trip to Ireland to find her Grandmother’s childhood home — a place she was forced to leave because of famine, oppression, and some trickery by her older sister. “Sometimes it takes a loss to make you really understand what you had,” Sue reflects in the story. And in this lovely piece, the gifts and contributions of all those who have gone before us are recognized and honored.
The second story on this CD, City Girls, deals with the trials and tribulations over “fitting in” — and demonstrates the endlessly creative ways people signal who’s “better than” or “less than”. Taking place at a spiritual retreat in 1965, Sue and her teenage friends share family secrets, discuss a variety of taboos, and begin to find a voice on such diverse topics as religion, income, addictions and race.
If you plan to use these stories in a class or book club, you’ll love the discussion questions provided in the CD insert — as well as interesting tidbits about the people in each story!

The Illusions of Diversity
A keynote address written and presented by Susan O’Halloran
What’s more intimidating than giving a keynote address to your peers? Not much. Sue delivered this talk in front of 700 storytellers at the 2003 National Storytelling Network conference. In it, she helps well-intentioned people who mean to treat everyone fairly find their unconscious blind spots. And Sue accomplishes all this in the most loving and non-blaming way you’ve ever heard. One of the most provocative features about this insightful talk is that Sue demonstrates how when we truly open our thinking and our institutions — everyone wins!
In this recording, Sue inspires her own professional storytelling community, but what she says applies to other fields as well — just ask all the groups that have hired Sue to customize this talk for their industries.

Searching for Heroes
Written and told by Susan O’Halloran
Another story that begs the question, “Why didn’t we learn this?” is The Oberlin Rescue of 1858. Over 700 people risked imprisonment and a stiff fine to thwart the re-capture John Price, an African American man who had escaped slavery. Sue came upon this story searching for accounts of people taking a stands for one another. But, as it turns out, this particular success story wasn’t as straightforward as it appeared. Sue discovered that many of the white abolitionists who risked their freedom for John Price came armed with double standards, hidden agendas, and moral ambiguity.
Are heroes ever all they’re cracked up to be? Does it really matter if progress prevails? Sue ponders this historical dilemma and adds a few philosophical musings for today.
Dad’s Story, also featured on this CD, hits closer to home
than many might want to admit. What do you do when people you love and
admire say or do bigoted things? Listening to Dad’s Story,
one is compelled to reflect on the whole idea of memory. Not just around
the event portrayed in this story — that day in 1968 when Dr. King
was murdered — but the events that take place in our everyday lives.
When are our memories to be trusted? When do we forget in order to protect
ourselves? And… how might we accept our imperfections with a little
more grace? This CD comes with a thought-provoking discussion guide.

Dividing Lines: The Education of a
Chicago White Girl in Ten Rounds
Written and told by Susan O’Halloran
Okay, call us biased … but we believe this is some of Sue’s
best, most powerful work ever. Typical comments heard after this one-woman
show include:
“Now I understand how our neighborhoods got segregated.” “I
never knew all this went on. Why didn’t we learn this?”
Upon listening to this CD, things that may have seemed way complicated and complex, suddenly become very clear. And who would expect being amused by a piece that talks about Housing Acts and Urban Renewal? This entertaining and thought-provoking CD recording is the next best thing to seeing Sue perform the show live onstage in her boxing attire - jersey, trunks and gloves (one white and one black). Get your ringside seat now! Dividing Lines comes with an interactive discussion and action guide.

Mothers and Other Wild Women
Performed by Susan O’Halloran with Nancy Donoval
and Beth Horner.
Those two wild women, Beth Horner and Nancy Donoval, join Sue for a rollicking ladies’ night out. This lively, entertaining CD contains excerpts from the trio’s highly acclaimed full-length show of the same name. Whether these three fiery gals are “dishing” about romance novels, strapless red dresses, super moms or stress management, you’ll find the entire CD to be a joyously uplifting celebration of the many roles women play.
P.S. The show has evolved quite a bit since this recording made in 1993, but we believe the stories stand the test of time, packed with humor, insight, and lots of heart!

Moments of Grace
Written and told by Susan O’Halloran
Some people figure it out more easily than others, but it took a trip to the remote mountains of Guatemala with her two young adult sons for Sue to realize they just might have something to teach her! Sue, a proud child of the 60s, worries about the lack of idealism and social consciousness her post-Watergate sons display — so she takes them to a part of the world where people have devoted their lives to helping others. On this journey through Central America, Sue discovers that she is the one in need of faith and hope.
This popular CD also features a couple of Sue’s original fables, along with a delightful story about her oldest son and the surprises of empty nest syndrome.

The Woman Who… (Book Series)

The Woman Who Lost Her Heart
by Susan O'Halloran, Susan Delattre
Has your life become a long list of “to-dos”? Sue found that
hers had until she was jolted out of the rat race by a dance injury — and
a recovery process that,
as Sue puts it, “Wrestled me to the ground for a nice long chat with
my body.” What do you do if you can’t do your to-dos?
In the resulting “down time” Sue partnered with co-author, Susan Delattre, to create a fable set in the future. The story begins with the heroine running herself ragged: “The more she did, the more she found herself wondering if she was actually accomplishing anything. Though overwhelmed, she kept saying ‘yes’ because she never knew for sure if she was doing enough.”
With such a lifestyle (familiar?), is it a surprise that the woman wakes up one day to discover she cannot find her heart? Our heroine’s journey to find her heart is an exhilarating adventure — one that will have readers reflecting on how well they are taking care of themselves.

The Woman Who Found Her Voice
by Susan O'Halloran, Susan Delattre
The two Susans are at it again! In this fantastic tale, you’ll find yourself rooting for a medieval heroine named Marina who shape-shifts between a wolf and a turtle in order to deal with grief, learn the value of community, and speak up for what she believes. But the biggest trick of all — Marina manages to take a stand without having to create an enemy in the process.
Nowadays, people call it spiritual activism or a new politics of change — whatever label you use, it’s a great read! One woman reported that she blamed this book for a “bad skin day.” She read the book while she soaked in the bathtub, and couldn’t get out of the tub until she finished the book! Perhaps the water got cold, but her heart warmed to the magical healing of this fable that reviews called “a new politics with soul”.

Tribes and Bridges
Written and performed by Antonio Sacre, La'Ron Williams
and Susan O'Halloran
This audience-pleasing piece is as enlightening as it is entertaining — featuring inspired performances by three acclaimed storytellers. Through their unique stories, this DVD shows how we are taught, internalize and experience prejudice as the tellers explore the difference between personal and institutional racism. You’ll meet La’Ron Williams, an African-American raised in an all black neighborhood, Susan O’Halloran, an Irish-American woman from an all-white Catholic parish, and Antonio Sacre, a Cuban-American man straddling two cultures and being forced to choose between them.
This DVD tells the stories of a well-intentioned teacher who unconsciously shames her students of color, older women who lower their aching bones onto city sidewalks for non-violent, civil rights demonstrations and even a flan-throwing grandmother who will stop at nothing to encourage her grandson to reclaim his cultural identity! Their stories are different, yet they are woven with the common themes of family love, loyalty, and humor in the face of adversity.
Show Times: You can present this captivating 90-minute performance to your group in one sitting — or it can be broken into three or four sections. It also features a 20-minute question and answer period at the end of the performance.

Walking the Talk: How to Think and Act Like an Inclusive Organization --
(A Train-the-Trainer Program)
Let’s
face it… Not every small business or non-profit organization has
the budget to hire a diversity consultant to train their employees. That’s
why Sue designed this easy-to-execute program — allowing groups to
work with their own people.
Walk the Talk offers a five-hour diversity program that you can
teach in-house.
It comes complete with course outlines, sample lessons, PowerPoint slide
presentation and a participant manual… as well as innovative ideas
on recruitment, retention, expanding your supplier base, and starting your
own diversity council. What’s more, it also comes with a Train-the-Trainer
audio program so you don’t have to go it alone. Plus, every order
includes a bonus copy of the popular DVD, Tribes& Bridges!
Success Stories: Organizations have hired Sue to work with employees from different regional offices, who were then sent back home with the Walk the Talk audio program. Now that’s the best of all worlds — live diversity training and follow-up support to conduct the seminar themselves and ensure success in the daily work environment.

Teacher Series: Teachers Making a Difference
Sue had taught diversity awareness and skills to teachers and
school administrators for years. After each workshop, the middle and high
school staffs begged, “Give us something we can use in the classroom.
There are Teacher Tolerance materials for elementary schools, but nothing
for us.”
So Sue wrote Kaleidoscope: Valuing Differences and Creating Inclusion complete
with handouts, sample scripts, hours of videotaped interviews, and 400
pages of lesson plans — enough to span several semesters. Then she
started to hear from teachers, “I love the curriculum. But I’m
a little nervous about teaching it. What if it causes more division between
my students?” So Sue created a six-hour webinar, The Teachers
Series: Teachers Making a Difference, to coach those who want to
introduce the curriculum into their classrooms. This Train-the-Trainer
program comes complete with a guidebook. Now you get the full package
— the curriculum, videos and guidebook, with Sue right by your side
guiding you each step of the way. Order it for yourself… or give it
to a favorite teacher.
Note: You can also buy the two-year curriculum separately, without the Train-the-Trainer program.

How to Think, Act and Be Seen As a Leader for Young People
If you’re someone who works with young people, this
is the program for you.
Sue believes every young person can be a leader… so she offers teens
and young adults exactly what she teaches Fortune 500 executives: the tools
of creativity, introspection, marketing and communication — the skills
that define success. In her work with schools, Sue talked with scores of
teachers who work as moderators of one club or another. And most bemoaned
the fact that with all the logistical details involved, they just didn’t
have the time or opportunity to provide leadership training for their students.
This audio program, which comes with Facilitator and Participant Manuals explores a variety of topics including: How do you keep your own thinking and actions powerful and effective? How do you motivate others to volunteer and take part in your events and clubs? How can young people contribute to a positive school and community environment?
Tips for Sharing: Teach this class to a group of young people with whom you work. Or, order it for a youth organization as a self-study program which members can learn independently on their MP3 players. Or, gift it to your children’s school!

Hunt For Spring
by Susan O'Halloran
Illustrated by Dick Smolinski
“When Winter holds Spring prisoner in the coldest part of the world,

warm sunshine again. So a brave girl named Ursula decides to go north to
